ZOMBIES ARE FOR REAL. A recent article in Consumer Reports states this is becoming an epidemic. You may have even seen some. They're those folks with dark circles under their eyes, who exhibit irritability, anxiety, decreased brain function, etc. The symptoms also include apathy, high blood pressure, weight gain and headaches. The cure is very simple...A NEW MATTRESS. Do I need a new mattress? If you wake up with aches and pains, your mattress shows visible signs of overuse, has lumps and is 5-7 years old. Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow and forecast us 6 more weeks of bad weather? Or will he be shadowless and stay above ground as an indicator that spring is quickly approaching? Every year I wonder how this holiday became so popular. Why do we bring the poor groundhog out of his hole every year so early in the morning? I did a little bit of research and found out that this ritual started in the 18th and 19th century as a Pennsylvannia German culture.

And in this century we still wake that poor groundhog up early in the morning and see if he can predict what the weather will do. Even if you don't believe the groundhog knows what he is talking about in regards to the weather it's still fun to follow along, don't you agree?

Like a Good Neighbor...

As many of you know UFS adopted Neighborhood House many years ago as their primary charity. Once again this year UFS was able to give the SANTA FOR SENIORS PROGRAM and the TOY SHOP well over $10,000 worth of merchandise and gifts. This year over 900 children and more than 1,100 seniors received gifts that would otherwise not have happened. How fortunate and blessed we are to have made such a difference in the lives and Christmases of 2,000 people. This is a herculean effort and Neighborhood House should be proud of what we accomplished together. Unfortunately the need keeps growing and growing. There will be more folks that need help in 2012 and until the economy turns around we need to keep them in mind. No matter what we have or don't have there are always others who need our help. So thank you for helping us take care of our Neighbors at Neighborhood House. Together we can keep making a difference to our adopted family.

You know there's a lot to be said for this time of year. We know it's not the cold weather,or the snow or the oppressive gloom...It's that sudden influx of cash that our government has been holding for us throughout 2011. It's an opportunity to upgrade....upgrade you ask? Absolutely, upgrade your appliances, your furniture or whatever is a source of aggravation in your life, (Ladies,I did not mean it is time to upgrade your man....although at times it's an appealing idea. Unfortunately I suspect they may have the same idea, just as long as we don't have the idea on the same day and time we'll be OK.) No I'm talking about stuff...Like I'm so tired of looking at my WHITE REFRIGERATOR, AND STOVE AND DISHWASHER. Why can't I have STAINLESS? We Survived Christmas!!!

Congratulations...we survived Christmas!!!! Not only that, we survived 2011 with its lousy economy, unemployment, etc. Our hope is that 2012 sees an improved economy, our young men and women home from overseas, and Peace in our land.

On a personal note, I was once again very lucky this Christmas. I didn't get the rocks in my socks I probably deserved. One of my favorite gifts was a bottle of Titos Vodka. It comes all the way from the Lone Star state, Texas. Unlike its competition from Poland or Russia, Titos is made from yellow corn which is GLUTEN FREE. So for those of us with tummy issues this is a great alternative especially when we're getting ready to celebrate the New Year. Christmas Magic

Here at UFS the Christmas magic has filled the stores...Our employees decidedly believe in Santa. They keep asking how GOOD do you have to be? (If only we knew the answer to that, or exactly why they're asking?) Our customers are also full of holiday cheer thanks in part to the wonderful holiday beverage tastings. Did I tell you about the Tequila Rose, a passionate combination of Strawberry cream liquor with a splash of tequila? OMG!!!! That's a Merry Christmas in a bottle. My other favorite is the Original Mother's Old Fashion Apple Pie Liquor, mixed with a little warm apple cider and you'd swear you were eating pie. Yum yum.

Every year around this time I feel like people forget about Thanksgiving and skip right to Christmas shopping. Based on the tradition of this season I want to share what I am thankful for this year. I'm thankful for the obvious: family, friends, good health, etc. But I'm also thankful for much more. I asked the people at UFS what they are thankful for, here are a few responses I got....

Yes it's that time of year...Thanksgiving when we celebrate our founding fathers who mastered the art of celebratory eating, the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and everyone's favorite pumpkin pie. But also we have the opportunity to surround ourselves with the family who mean so much to us. It's Fun. Sometime during our party we all just need to spend a minute and remember our blessing and our great God who has given us so much. As for myself I am thankful for many, many things, my country, the young men and women who sacrifice so I can be free, my family both at home and at UFS, and our wonderful customers who are loyal and supportive. After 30 years we continue to do business on Adams Street and some may say it's a miracle, we say God has truly blessed us. Happy Thanksgiving!

As you all know the holidays are almost here so let's take a few minutes to slow down, take a deep breath and reflect on what we have to be thankful for! We have so many blessings in our lives: family, friends, jobs, homes and the list goes on and on! I don't know about all of you but I know that I can remember a time when life was a lot simpler and the holidays were centered more on enjoying good company and good food than around gifts and the like. Why don't we all try this year to get back a little bit of those "good old days", try to smile a little more, say "Hi" to the people you meet and instead of buying a gift, make a donation to charity! Not only will you make someone else feel better but you will feel better about yourself too. Trick or Treat!

Halloween is less than a week away! I remember when I was child that was the talk of the school. "What are you going to be for Halloween?!" Everyone wanted to know and as children we were eager to tell. Now in my adult life I still get invited to Halloween parties but it's not the same as the joy of getting candy on that day. I've noticed that as an adult the same question seems to arise. Most years I pay it no attention, but this year I'm thinking of possible costumes. Thankfully we have costumes for 50% off already in our store. I won't have to go far to find something that suits my needs.

So what are you going to be for Halloween?!

Football Frenzy

I don't know what's better. The beginning of the school year to signify the beginning of High School football or the start of College football. Some people could arguably say that the season opener for the NFL is the best part of the fall as well. Either way it goes we have awesome deals year round to support any need that one may have. I must say I am a football fan and I personally prefer to watch the Junior Football League (JFL) in the area more than anything. We have a pop-up cooler at UFS that would be perfect to put water in for my nephew's entire team when it's his week to bring beverages. Because his games are on Saturday mornings the cooler can also double as a great tailgating tool Friday night for the high school games. I plan to go see my Alma mater play in October for the Homecoming game and will definitely need a cooler and chair for tailgating purposes. Nothing better than a cooler on wheels that has easy access to the beverages. Another great tailgating item will be the Bulls-Eye washers game. It's great for this time of the year.

I think I'm set for some great football! How about you?!

For the vactioner....

Clothes? Check! Shoes? Check! All packed and ready to go? Check! Check! This is the best time of the year! VACATION!!! I love vacation because you get to go to a new place [possibly] and explore the surroundings. The curiosity and anticipation that arises from traveling somewhere new whether near or far is exciting. This year we are using the holiday weekend to take a road trip to New Orleans, the Big Easy! There's so much to do and see in New Orleans I don't think we know where to begin.

Every trip starts with packing and where better to buy some new luggage than UFS? That's just what I did! A "Simple" Solution to a Somewhat Difficult Task

It's that time of the year again when the weather is warm and people are having tons of parties; birthday parties, graduation parties, family gatherings, everything that warmer weather brings. Speaking of graduation parties I have two to attend this weekend. That means I must find the time to go shopping! Wait, why stress? I can just get on the UFS website and order 2 gift cards, attach a card to both and I'm set! While I'm at it I had better get one for my cousin's birthday which is this weekend as well. I wonder if they send cards with the gift card so I can write her a message as well? I'll check into that.

I tend to procrastinate in everything I do, maybe I should buy one for my dad as well. Father's Day is coming soon and he does love the store. He walks around the store every time he comes in and I'm sure he would find some use for this gift card. Boy, these gift cards are definitely going to come in handy.The best part is that they will all be sent to me so I won't even have to try and find the time to go down to the store to pick them up before I attend all these parties.

I'm so thankful that UFS finally stepped into this century and started selling things online. Makes my life easier. I can't wait until they start to sell more than gift cards online. (I urge you to comment below if you agree!)

Taste of Spring

The birds are chirping and the sun is shining...well maybe not but it definitely looked like Spring in our store this weekend. There were a plethora of people here for our popular Easter Wine, Spirit, and Beer tasting. This was the biggest tasting we have had so far this year and it was lots of fun! I teamed up with one other friend and came to enjoy the tasting fun. There were over 100 different craft beers, wines, and spirits.
We definitely liked the summer flavors that we tasted in the craft beer section. If you enjoy beer I invite you to come to the store and check out our new beer section (Coming soon to the web!) that is stocked with all of the craft beers from this weekend's tasting as well as many others. We also tasted many different wines and picked some favorites out of the bunch (Like our Facebook page and I will share them with you!). I didn't taste many spirits, however my friend and several other tasters seemed to enjoy them. There were quite a few new vodka flavors that I noticed as well as other liqueurs that looked to be popular. With all that free stuff how could one not enjoy themselves?

When is the right time to plant flowers? Anytime is the right time, but now is the best time! I was walking through the store today and I thought even though the weather is a little cool I should plant some plants and flowers. We have just about everything you need right here at our store. We have a trailer load of plastic pots to start your planting season right. There are a variety of these pots in our store just waiting for homes. After you get the soil and plastic pot go ahead and pick up a bag of our Organic Seed Starter Mix to make sure your plants grow healthy and strong. While this is definitely my first time planting flowers on my own I think this should be fun. What else is needed? Hmmm...

Oh that's right we come to the seeds which can also be found in our store. We have pretty flower seeds. (I hope I don't kill these flowers!) I see that we also sell watering cans, I think I should pick one up along with a water hose. I think when the weather gets warm again I'm going to get much use out of all of this!

A Taste of France

Did you make it to our Bordeaux Wine Tasting last night? If not, you sure missed an exciting event. A little over 80 people came to taste phenomenal Bordeaux wines, socialize, and network. The wines were available to be bought as well at this tasting. It was a great opportunity for people to come out and try new wines to possibly add to their collections.

Not sure what Bordeaux wine is exactly? That's okay, I researched it for you just in case you didn't know. A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. According to my research, on average over 700 million bottles of wine are produced a year. 89% of wine produced in Bordeaux is red, while the other 11% is compiled of sweet white wines, dry white wines, sparkling wine and rosé. There are approximately 60 appellations of Bordeaux wine.

I hope that small description helps you. However, that's not the point here. The point is that if you are interested in trying new things and you like wine you should come to our next wine tasting. (Stay tuned. Details coming soon about that one!) This is my personal invitation to you to come join other wine drinkers young and old at our next tasting.

What is Presidents' Day? Where did this holiday even come from? Is this just another holiday made up by retailers to have a sale on merchandise? Well I looked into this holiday that gives some of us a 3 day weekend off of work while giving others extra hours at their job.
I learned that back in 1971 the United States government set an official day to be celebrated honoring two presidents born in February, President Washington and President Lincoln. Before this day was set many people honored President Lincoln on his birthday which is February 12 and then honored President Washington on his birthday which is February 22.

Well down at UFS we celebrate President Washington and President Lincoln as well as all other presidents who have held office. However we also think it's a good idea to do as our peers and give our customers an excellent sale to shop. What is Spring Fever? I know for many of my fellow Midwesterners we feel this syndrome every year when the restlessness of winter meets the excitement of warmer weather. According to some theorists spring fever is actually "A feeling of restlessness, excitement, or laziness brought on by the coming of spring". I know many of us have felt this way at one time or another. (I sure have!)

Staying warm and fuzzy all over....

What better way to spend winter months in the Midwest than inside on a sofa? That's my favorite thing to do! I enjoy a glass of wine and a good book or any good television show any night while watching the snow fall or the temperature drop. Just like me, many of my friends have lived in the Midwest all of our lives and every winter we complain about the weather. Our favorite way to cope is hanging out together at home watching TV and enjoying adult beverages. We are all young and fresh into a job or career and living on our own. New living room furniture is all but expected in this new phase of our lives; however, most of us can't afford it. (Come in and ask about our financing!) While walking through the furniture store I found something that spiked my interest as well as made me think of my friends who could use it as well. We have a room group with a sofa, loveseat, 3 tables, and 2 lamps ranging in price from $599.00-$799.00. (That's a good range, right?)

The motion furniture I found at the store seemed like a great solution for nights alone as well as nights with friends. This furniture comes in leather, which is my preference, as well as other fabrics. At first glance I imagined myself sitting on the couch with a glass of Riesling in the cupholder (Yeah a cupholder in the furniture, cool right?!) and a book watching the snow fall. Then I imagined my friends sitting on the couch with a cocktail while watching the biggest NBA game for the week. Veterans Day

Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941 and made a huge impact on the world, including a tall, thin salesman, 25 years old living in a small community in western Pennsylvania. Little did he know the actions of the Japanese would forever change his life path. The following day he enlisted in the United States Army, much to his parents' concern. Undaunted he forged forward like many of his peers who became know as "The Greatest Generation". He ended up becoming a pilot of the B24's and flew in the European and African fronts. He used to enjoy telling stories about how he ran out of gas flying over the Mediterranean sea and glided to a stop on the beach, or how they landed and crossed a farm field to discover once on the other side it was filled with land mines.... The real trick, he'd say, was how they got back across it. He'd reminisce about the girl he had met at the USO concert in December and how she had followed him to Phoenix the following May for their wedding. (Then they had 4 children one of them being me and the other Pierre).

He was a Veteran and this week we celebrate all veterans...We thank you all for your service to our country and the enormous sacrifices you have made on our behalf. We ask the Good Lord for keep and protect all of you currently serving and those who have done so. God bless you.

Ready for candy corn and plastic rats???

Halloween is right around the corner. Good thing UFS has a great selection of items to help us celebrate. There are assorted costumes for the kiddies, enough for the whole crew...

...and all kinds of bizarre decorations. The most disturbing one is the "Rat in a Trap" a huge rat that moves as if dying when you press the button. There's a witch waterfall, cobwebs, (that you don't want to get rid of), pumpkins, scarecrows, witches of all shapes and sizes AND CANDY. I don't know what I like better, the Hershey's Crunch or the Three Musketeers, or M&Ms....I miss those days when the kids would come home after Trick or Treating and put their candy away .....and only I would know their secret spots....and when they were fast asleep I'd slip into one of their bags and steal my favorites. (True confessions of a chocolate addicted mother). Good thing the candy is so affordable at UFS I'll just go buy my favorites myself.

THE RETURN OF FOOTBALL. Just into week two and I'm already excited about my beloved team....no it's not the New Orleans Saints, or the New England Patriots, or the Indianapolis Colts, It's the GREEN BAY PACKERS, the team where men are warriors even if they have long flowing blond hair. ( I guess you can have that hair if you lead the NFL in quarterback sacks.) It's the team where cold, snow, and ice are a way of life. It's the team that rides their youngest fans' bicycles from the club house to the field as the tykes run alongside (even if their knees are bumping their chins).

Well, before we can really enjoy the season we need SUPPLIES...You got it, beer (my favorite is Land shark), chips, sausage, cheese, pizza, etc. These are all available at UFS and come look at the prices!!!!

My husband decided he needed a new recliner for the season???? Now women live in circles and guys live in boxes so it's ok I don't understand. It's all about geometry....who knew.

Anyway we bought him a new recliner. It's a Franklin big man's recliner that's on sale this week for $299....It's a chocolate, faux leather and it's amazing. So we're ready....BRING ON THE GAMES!!!!

How Are You Sleeping?

A recent study by Stanford University reported that among 9,000 U.S. adults, 20% reported that they have fallen asleep or have been seriously drowsy in situations requiring a high degree of concentration (like driving a car, attending a sales meeting, etc.). OMG!These folks are out there- driving on 116 or 74- scary! These people need better sleep. Better sleep starts with a better mattress. Time for School

I can't believe the summer is almost over! It seems like it barely started, yet when I'm driving down Central Illinois roads and I see all the beautiful ripening crops, I know that fall is coming. The corn is probably 6-8 feet tall and the soybeans are lush and full. Another dead give-a-way is when I come to UFS and see all the "Back to School" supplies on the shelves- everything from paper, pencils, lunch boxes, back packs, etc. It's hard to believe just how many little things kids need for school- they can really pile up.Poor kids! So you know how UFS is always looking for new sources for DEALS...Well, the furniture store has found three new vendors of furniture. The first is ROWE FURNITURE which is made in North Carolina and is exquisitely tailored. The ROWE furniture that UFS carries can be ordered in many fabric options. Now you can customize your furniture so that it's just right for your taste.

We're going on vacation! Once a year, we let all the stress and drudgery of day-to-day life behind and escape to somewhere special-- somewhere therapeutic, restful, and calm. I'm SO ready to go, but unfortunately I'm in a big sweat (not because of the heat though). I've left lots of travel details until the last minute.Good thing UFS has suitcases of various sizes, plus totes, backpacks, and purses. I really like the American Jourester for $49.99.

I also purchased a new cosmetic bag, beach towel, small size toiletries and PLENTY of MUNCHIES for the road.

Boy, it's HOT!!!

To be cool as a cucumber, you need to come to the appliance department and check out our window air-conditioners. My sister just bought one for her bedroom. Her bedroom is on the second floor and the central air conditioner doesn't have enough force to cool her room. She purchased the 8,000 BTU for $169.00!We also carry the 10,000 BTU for $239. After her purchase, she only leaves her room for meals. I really miss her.

Father's Day is going to be here very soon... are you ready? I know I'm still trying to decide what to get my father this weekend. I'm definitely going to find something here at UFS. Some dads might like the collectible neon novelty signs, with either sports teams or alcohol brands (or maybe just the real stuff, like a nice 12 pack of Leinenkugel!). Or other dads might dream big and hope for a new recliner or HDTV!
Apparently someone thought it would be nice to combine the beer and the recliner... oh my.Anyway, as for my dad, I know he prefers sporting goods or tools, and luckily the hardware department at UFS has great deals on everything from leather tool belts to power tools.

Roll Out the Red... (I Mean Berber) Carpet!

My fiance and I are still renovating our home, and we have made so much progress! We're now ready to start thinking about floor coverings, and with perfect timing! UFS actually has many types of laminate wood flooring, vinyl flooring, and carpet-- and carpet remnants are 50% off right now! I was pleasantly surprised by the low prices and wide selections.
Our house has hardwood floors in almost all rooms (which we plan on refinishing), but the bathrooms need new flooring. We'll probably put vinyl flooring in the bathrooms-- something similar to these.
There is another room where I think I'd like to have Berber carpet installed. UFS carries three brands of this tight loop carpet, and prices per sq. ft. start at $0.69! I think this carpet will give the room a softer, cozier feel than the hardwood floors, plus it's comfortable all year round, and best of all-- easy to clean!

My mother always says that right around Mother's Day is the best time of the year for crappie fishing. As a child I remember fishing in the spring at our lake. For a few weeks, crappie fishing was really great and we could reel in several fish each hour. I love that feeling of excitement when you feel a fish bite, and the fight between you and the fish begins.

Everyday when I walk in the door at UFS I think about how much I want to go fishing when I see all the fishing equipment for sale. Look how nice this pole is-- it would be great for crappie fishing.

With all this quality fishing gear, all I need after I leave UFS is a good fishing place.... probably not this one!

Hi, it's Melissa! I am working on my degree in English, and I have been working at UFS for about two months. Right now I'm helping with the UFS website, and I have learned a lot already. Before I was hired, I had never really been to UFS; I had just heard these loud commercials telling me how much money I could save. Then on my first day, I couldn't believe the crazy deals! I love stores like T. J. Maxx and Marshalls, which have brand name merchandise at discounted prices, and yet UFS has more selection and lower prices. But how cool is this... I can shop for a cute pink bracelet, new cookware, garden tools, and curtains while my fiance can browse the HD TVs, the power tools, and these crazy-inexpensive authentic football jerseys (he was super pumped about finding those, and had to have two Chicago Bears jerseys!).

My fiance and I recently bought an old house which we're going to be remodeling and repairing this summer before moving in. Months ago we constructed a strict "house budget" of all the costs we were going to incur. Every day when I walk around UFS, I find more and more ways we can cut costs, and I just dream about all the ways we can put the extra money to use. I could go on and on and on and on and on and on about all the surprising things I've found at UFS for our house.

Isn't it lovely? ... at least from a distance. You can't see the stained walls from here! ;)

However, my favorite discovery has been this BEAUTIFUL bedroom set which I will buy this summer for our new home. With a rich dark brown finish and plenty of ornate detailing, it has artistic old world charm. The intricate designs all over furniture matches the crown molding in the house... I just love it! Now there's inspiration to get the repairs done!

When I took this job, I had no idea I would be working at a place where I can save money on appliances, cabinets, flooring, furniture, hardware, decorations, yard supplies... practically EVERYTHING we're going to need to make the house better. Oh, and then of course all the Coronas we'll need to celebrate when we're done with all the work. :)

The weather in Central Illinois the past week has been amazing. I've found myself searching for excuses to get outside. When I see those plants start to poke their little heads from beneath the dirt, I go into my GARDENING MODE. Well, this spring has found me lacking some crucial inventory for my quest. So I went to the store and purchased soil, pots, gloves, tools, etc.

I'm thinking about kicking it up a notch with some garden sculptures (gazing ball), bench, or wind chimes. the remodel and my nervous breakdown continue

Imagine the ugliest wood paneling in the world.

Take that image and in your mind double it's hideous offensiveness. That is what was lurking besides the ugly, old lady wallpaper in my man friend's kitchen.

So after taking the terrible kitschy curtains down I began ripping and scraping off the wallpaper.

Only to be faced with this---

That my friends is the world's ugliest paneling. I didn't even know they MADE panelling like this! And, for the record, I don't think they do anymore. This is the finest, ugliest patterned wallpaper the 70's had to offer.

So, per my mother's suggestion, I washed the walls with TSP, a special cleaning agent, made for cleaning walls before painting. Such compounds as well as primer can be found in our paint department:

I then began priming. It felt so good to cover up the panel of death and make it all white and clean

However, I noticed that in certain places the primer was starting to crackle. I, like all good daughters, had just followed my mother's advice and NOT read the directions on the can of primer. Apparently I wasn't suppose to first wash the walls with TSP-- it reacts with the primer.

I thought about crying. Instead I took myself down to the store where Hardware Terri-- the Diva of the Hardware World told it wasn't the end of the world. Sandpaper was my salvation:

I bought myself some sandpaper and sanding down the cracks in the primer so they wouldn't show up in the paint. It was slightly annoying and my mother felt badly that she had given me some faulty advice, but such is life.

After the sanding I used that nifty blue painter's tape to tape around all the molding, the windows, and the cabinets. It was time consuming, but dare I say-- a little fun.

Anybody can undertake such a transformation. All you need is a little patience, some courage, and the UFS Hardware and Paint Department.

My man friend (he turned 30 this month... boy he ain't) and I have been working on fixing up his house. He's lived there for a few years and while he's very bright about a lot of things, home improvement is not an area of strength for him.

The first room we're going to tackle is the kitchen. First up are the cabinets which aren't BAD, but they were a little dingy. I gave them a hearty scrub and they already look much better. Next up is an inexpensive facelift in the form of new knobs or cabinet pulls.

The old ones were terrifyingly oldfashioned :

Good thing there is such a wide selection in our hardware department. There are brass, pewter and chrome pulls and knobs. The styles vary from being very traditional to FUNKY.

When I first started working on the kitchen I went to all the big home repair/remodel stores to get some inspiration. I couldn't BELIEVE how expensive cabinet hardware was. $4 for a single knob! I have 27 drawers and cabinets that need new hardware so it really adds up. Luckily at UFS we have a wide variety at affordable prices.

So my friend Ashley is married and just had a baby,Charlotte.

Adorable, right?

Her husband is a super handy guy. Seriously, he re-plumbed their house in the dead of winter. Not awesome timing but still, SO handy. They've slowly been fixing up their home. Well Ashley is SICK to death of her old metal cabinets.

With all the the home remodeling and new stove, Ashley's husband told her there was no way they could afford new cabinets. They had been looking for cabinets in all the wrong places.

UFS to the rescue. Ashley came down and had our cabinet guru, Jason, design her kitchen.

The solid wood cabinets with oak fronts, in 2 designs were just the thing. She fell in love with the medium finish and the island that Jason added to their kitchen. When her husband saw the quote for the new cabinets he was blown away.

At UFS we carry two different manufactured mattresses, Sealy and Englander. They are both excellent products, but because we're all a little different so are they. Some of us like FIRM. Some of us like PILLOWTOP. Some of us like the in between. What you have to do is lay on the bed. Within several minutes you'll discover what's best for you. After any mattress purchase you need to understand your body has to adjust. Usually it takes a minimum of 2 weeks before you fully adjust to a new mattress. Initially your body tells you.... This is not where I'm supposed to be sleeping... because I'm use to that piece of junk you've made me sleep on.... But gradually you'll convince your body that this is the new mattress on which you belong.

So for any of you watching tv at 3-4 am because you can't sleep, you need to come to UFS and speak to one of our mattress specialist about getting some better sleep.

He and I were born on the same day several years apart.

(It's hotly contested what effect the snuggie had in the norths victory at Antietam)

It is a bewitchingly special day for lots of reasons: 1. we get to eat cake....My mother makes the best carrot cake with cream cheese frosting...and my favorite supper, leg of lamb, Brussels sprouts and smashed potatoes...The other reason it's so beguiling is I always had the day off from school growing up. Now that I am older and wiser the date causes a lot of sizzle in the world of retail.

This year we are sending out 30,000 direct mailers to our customers outlining our weekend specials. We have appliances, furniture, cabinets, exercise equipment, flooring, etc., etc., etc. Like Abe Lincoln we try to treat all people with respect and dignity, giving all of you the BEST DEAL. Gone To The Dogs........

My younger sister is in college in Pennsylvania. She came home for the holidays with her very best friend, Belle. Belle is a 7 month, 70 lb Labrador retriever. She possesses the enthusiasm of a pup yet the size of a small, fuel efficient motor vehicle. In regards to her being a hunting dog, the only thing Belle hunts for is LOVE. She is affectionate and very well behaved. She doesn't understand that there is a weight limit on most laps and tries to oust the 5 lb Yorkie. The Yorkie will NOT BE DENIED. Belle loves to romp in the snow and can endure the cold for hours.

I must admit we did some spoiling of her while she was home. She'd come in from the cold and we had to give her treats, the healthy, nourishing kind.We also got her some special Christmas gifts, the new bed, the new collar, the huge bones she devoured, bowls, and some new dog food.

I think my mother thinks Belle is the grandchild she's been hinting around about. My sister and Belle left on Sunday and drove 9 hours straight back to Steeler country. It's too bad. We don't know who we miss more, my sister or Belle.

So my girlfriend Liz is getting married. In traditional style she has picked the month of June. Of course I didn't tell her why that's such a popular month for wedding....It seems long ago when spring sprung our forefathers took their annual bath. So as not to waste it the nuptials were soon after. If the bride missed hers she was allowed to carry a bunch of sweet smelling flowers to disguise any unpleasant scents.

Well, Liz came to me complaining about all the huge expense of getting married. It is then I told her all about the bargains available at UFS in the wedding department. There are tiaras, cake toppers (I really like the one with the two lovebirds on the swing), bouquets, invitations, bubbles, etc, etc, etc.

A customer from California purchased a cake topper from us online and we mailed it out to her. She said our selection was unique and AFFORDABLE. So Liz made a trip to UFS and she tells me she saved hundreds of dollars. So the wedding is on, Liz and John in June...Good Luck Guys!

You know I think I'm a victim of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). At this time of year when it's cold, dreary and the sun light is limited I find myself down in the mouth - you know - sad kind of. So to treat this unpleasant frame of mind I went shopping for man made sunlight - the more artificial the better.

How cute are these? The lamps come in a variety of colors & styles - from Victorian Tiffany to Funky Fur. There are hanging fixtures as well as table styles.

Well I did indeed acquire the much needed artificial sun shine. Unfortunately I haven't succeeded into tricking myself that spring is right around the corner. Maybe "most wanted" will help.

in a winter terrorland

Merry (early) Christmas everyone. Today is Christmas Eve. And worst case scenario I'm stuck in a ditch on the side of I-39.

That's right, on this All Merry's Eve we are headed to the Land of the North, the Land of my Forefathers, the Land of the Frozen Tundra... Okay, okay, you get the idea. We're going to Wisconsin-- Green Bay to be exact-- to spend the holidays with my father's side of the family.

My father is the designated holiday driver. The man has no fear... He sees the ice, the snowy rain, the slick roads as a challenge to GO FASTER. So therein lies the very real possibility of us being stuck in a ditch. No worries though-- Webmaster Dan has already promised he'd steal his father's truck (it has a plow on the front) and come dig us out.

In preparation for the harrowing ride and eventual snow-in, I planned ahead.

He thought the above said "Booty Tray" not Boot Tray, which, obviously would be concerning on all levels. #1 Why would you need a tray for your booty? unless we're talking about a pirate's booty-- then really you'd want a caste or a sturdy trunk of some kind to store your booty. #2 Why would my father or uncle purchase a bunch of booty trays for the store? Do they know something I don't? Like there is a big market out there for a booty holder other than pants?

In her family room she had, possibly, the UGLIEST sofa I have ever seen... Of course I didn't know it at the time. As a child it was just a regular sofa--one you sat on to watch cartoons or old musicals (we were the only elementary school age children who knew the entire score to "High Society").

As an adult, one who is understandably very passionate about furniture, I now know her sofa was hideous. There was one pretty awesome piece she had in that room, the TV room. That was her tea cart. You know, we never had tea on it... She kept a lamp on it and I think a potted plant, but it was pretty cool.

While this isn't quite like my grandmother's it's still pretty awesome, and on sale!

So I have been pretty good about getting a jump start on my Christmas shopping... My shopping acumen goes in fits and stages-- Last year I was super behind, doing things at the last minute. The year before, Christmas 2007 I was SO on my game-- I think I started shopping in September.

So I'm hoping 2009 will look a lil' more like 2007 than 2008.

But it's not going to if I don't get on it and start wrapping up the presents I have. Luckily we have a very comprehensive gift wrap aisle, complete with the secret delight of lazy people such as myself-- GIFT BAGS! Toss the present in there with some tissue paper... No tape or scissors required!

As Thanksgiving approaches, I start to think about the things I am thankful for... good health, De Loach wine, Most Wanted vodka, an understanding boyfriend, comfortable recliners, and this man, who I've mentioned before:Sales Rep Extraordinaire-- Franklin's own, John Beard! Now, before I go any further, let me say the female sales associates, customer service ladies and myself got together and voted-- He was a mite more attractive before he cut his hair... He promised to grow it out for us if we bought these recliners:
You want to know a secret? we would have bought the recliners anyway... Because they are AWESOME! They come in three, beautiful holiday chenilles and in one arm is a cup holder, storage (for your remote, tv guide, etc.) and buttons to activate heat and massage in the seat and in the back. In the other arm is a lil' frosty fridge cooler!.
Did I mention it's only $399? And that Franklin has a lifetime warranty? I think I might have... ;)

Alas, Julia Child-- I am not. However, I do enjoy cooking and like to attempt new recipes whenever I can. Luckily we have a very extensive housewares department that includes bakeware and cookware. In additional to our big appliances, we also have some smaller kitchen appliances that help feed my "I wanna be like Julia" habit.

Well, this past weekend I got out of town and went to Washington D.C. to visit a bunch of my college friends who live there.

I had a blast, of course! We saw a couple of movies and went to a concert of my most favorite performer. I also took the opportunity of being back in our nation's capital to gorge myself on ethnic food-- sushi, thai, and Gordon Biersch (which of these three does not belong?).

On Saturday my buddy, Kyle, and I went to the Newseum, a new museum in D.C. that focuses on- you guessed it- news!
I cannot recommend it more highly. SO interesting.

According to wikipedia, which, as you may know, anyone can edit thus is always accurate (cue eye roll) heritage is "something which is inherited from one's ancestors."

As my parents are all too ready to remind me of, I inherited football from my ancestors. More specifically-- I inherited the Green Bay Packers.

How does one inherit football? you might be asking... Well first, my mother is from Milwaukee and my father is from Green Bay. And secondly, it's not the football itself... It is more a maniacal obsession that manifests itself starting in the fall of the year and continues until January.

Honestly... I think I was adopted.

The sight of green and gold does nothing to me other than perhaps cause slight terror and fear. Terror because, gosh, I can think of countless other ways I'd rather be spending my Sunday afternoons or evenings other than glued to a tv set or (even worse-- when the game isn't being shown in Central IL) listening to a scratchy A.M. radio station broadcast the game. Fear because one of these day's my father is going to get so worked up during the game my mother is going to have to use that travel defibrillator she rents during football season.

Anyways, that was kind of a fun rant about my lost childhood, but I have to bring this back around to some merchandise!

So last Spring, my mother and I headed down to Tupelo, Mississippi (the birthplace of Elvis) for a furniture show. And yes, while we had an inordinate amount of fun checking out the different sofas and making some pretty good deals with a variety of manufacturers... THE BEST PART was on the way home, we stopped in Memphis to visit Graceland.

It was awesome! We got to tour his planes! We saw the house (the man had a white sofa that looked 15 ft. long-- I kid you not!)! We got to see all his awards and pretty, sparkly jump suits!

It was pretty cool (and I'm not like an Elvis groupie type of a person). If you were wondering, my mom is!

I adore Halloween. Always have. I like to dress up and pretend I'm someone I'm not. I also LOVE being scared-- in a safe way (think Haunted Houses or scary movies... not your big brother standing over your bed with a knife in the middle of the night when you're 10).

Here at UFS we have some really cool Halloween stuff.

This time it's not a sofa or a hunky furniture sales rep... It's UFS's oldest employee, and by oldest I don't mean he's been with us the longest... I mean the man fought in WWII... Towards the end of it but he was still there.

It's David. St. David to some. This week David turned 80, though he doesn't look (or act) a day over 75, 77 at the latest. If you stop by the furniture store Wednesday afternoon, Thursday afternoon or anytime Saturday, you're likely to be greeted in a usually boisterous and always fun way by David. He's the soul of our store and if I was 50 or 60 years older I'd be giving David's lovely wife, Rosemary, a run for her money.

So, while we don't offer marital/couples counseling per say... We do have these cool new mattresses from Englander that might make living with your significant other/sleep partner a little easier. Say you like a nice firm mattress and the hubby likes sleeping in a soft, downy cloud of delightfulness-- the Avon mattress is the solution!

Both sides have fabric encased, heavy duty quad coils but each side has a different gauge coil. The plush side has a 14.5 gauge and the firm side is 13.5. Comfortable and affordable-- The queen set is $749 or $799 with a pillowtop and the king set is $949 or $999 for a pillowtop.

I'm off to Las Vegas for a few days for the Furniture Show! Usually I go with my mother but this year I'm going with my brother, Gerard.

What happens is all the furniture manufacturers show all their new products (its pretty exciting...). I'm a little nervous about it... not gonna lie. My mom is the furniture/accessory Queen (also queen of the video poker machines, but I dont think she wanted the world to know that...), so she always takes the lead. It is over 12 million square feet of furniture! In three days!

But Gerard refuses to go with me so the tickets Mom and I bought for "Thunder from Down Under" are going to go to waste! Ha Ha! Kidding... Sort of.

So I will keep everyone posted about all the cool stuff I see.... or if I strike it big on the penny slots. High Rollah-- RIGHT HERE BABY.

Super Choice

There is a very special, special day for the Ladies of UFS... It is the day when our Franklin furniture sales rep comes to town. I know, I know... Totally wrong of us to enjoy our rep for reasons other than the fact that his product- Franklin furniture- is awesome, super comfortable and has a life time warranty... But the man is fiiiiiiiiiine. AND NICE! and did I mention he's from the South? He says "yes ma'am" with that drawl and I just melt.

My boyfriend gets jealous the days John comes to town to show us new products.

Most Wanted Vodka

Most Wanted Vodka is brewed in Kansas (who knew vodka could come from Kansas!?!?!?!), by High Plains Distillery.

The owner writes on his website that "My family has been in the alcohol business for six generations but this is the first time it has been legal. Of course in the hills of western North Carolina and Eastern Kentucky that was the tradition and a way of life..." How crazy is that? And I thought my family business had the market cornered on fun.

This is a modestly priced vodka with an immodest, almost unladylike, taste! It has become my (and my mother's) GO TO vodka.

And in case you were wondering, yes, we do carry olives.

The Illinois state government just passed the most unprecedented alcohol tax increase in state history. The tax rate for beer is going up 21 percent while the rate of tax for wine and liquor is increasing even more!

UFS is giving our customers a chance to stock up on your favorite brands before the tax increases goes into affect September 1.

If you want to prepare for the holiday season and all that family togetherness that will surely require some sort of libation, NOW IS THE TIME.

If you have a bar mitzvah, baptism, family reunion, birthday party or wedding in your future NOW IS THE TIME.

Heck, even if maybe just started seeing someone and they seem like they could be the one... NOW IS THE TIME.

The wick is all natural organic and crackles when it burns (like a fire... a good fire-- one that would be in a fireplace or that you'd roast marshmallows on, not like a grease fire). It also has very little soot.

I bring them for Hostess Gifts because they pack nicely, have a ton of different flavors (I brought Mulberry to my boyfriend's parents' house last weekend and Cinnamon to the Fourth of July party I went to), and are 7.99 (a steal, I promise you).

Friday's Greek Wine Tasting was a lot of fun and pretty tasty.

I like wine and drink it semi-regularly, but I am by no means an expert. The above lady in pink seemed to know what she was doing, so I just kept tasting what she did. This plan served me well!

A Taste of Greece

If you have never been down to UFS for one of our wine tasting here is your chance. Friday, July 17th we are having a wine tasting that will feature some wines of Greece... Not quite the sultry summer vacation I was hoping to take to the Greek Isles, but I'm hoping if I close my eyes and sip slowly it will feel close.

Bring a friend-- Friday, 2-6 pm (nothing quite so decadent as sipping wine in the middle of a Friday afternoon!).

First up is a 2006 Skouras Megas Oenos (try saying that three times fast). According to "Wine & Spirits" magazine "a touch of smoky oak adds polish" to this red wine "but not so much as to cover up the warm, cherry-red fruit and forest floor fragrance." Furthermore it was given a 93 rating by the magazine (and heck, they know their stuff). Get it for less at UFS! A 750 ml bottle will cost you $19.99!

Another wine we'll be tasting is the 2008 Sigalas Santorini, which is a white wine that was given a rating of 90 by "Wine & Spirits". The magazine calls it "unusually forward" which is how I like my wine... and my men, I won't lie... Take a bottle home for $16.99.

Another tasty, tasty buy is the 2008 Sigalas Asirtiko Athiri. Rated at a 90, "Wine & Spirits" reviewed it as "fragrant with honeysuckle and rich with sweet pineapple flavor". This is a perfect summer wine with an even summer-y (yes, I'm pretty sure that's a word) price of $11.99.

"Polished and elegant yet succulent and juicy"-- No, "Wine & Spirits" is not describing me! But rather the 2007 Skouras St. George. Modern, yet soulfull, (another description that could pertain to me) this red with a 90 rating is priced at $10.99. Who knew soul was so affordable?

The 2008 Skouras Moschofilero, which is rated at 88 by "Wine & Spirits", is a rich white that goes great with grilled fish. And if you need some grilling utensils-- hey! we have those too! At the bargain price of $11.99 a bottle, you'll have some cash leftover for this cool grilling tool:
Last up are our two extreme value wines-- the 2008 Skouras White and the 2007 Skouras Red. At $6.99 you can afford to stock up for you End of Summer Parties... or your Mid-July Shin-Digs... or your Friday Night Get-Togethers... or even your Tuesday Night "Stay At Homes"! An Introduction... Really.

My family has owned and operated UFS for the past 30 years. As a third generation retailer, I am proud to bring you The Real Deal-- the online guide to UFS.

Some Peorians still think of us as the Unclaimed Freight Store. You see, back in the 1940's the original owner would go down to the freight yards where they had misc. freight no one had claimed. He would pay pennies on the dollar for the merchandise and sell it to locals for incredibly low prices. So he might have cases of cans without any labels-- you could be eating peaches or you could be eating peas... At five cents a can though, customers were willing to take the risk! This idea grew into a business he called "Unclaimed Freight Store".

As the business grew he moved into a building to store and sell his goods. In 1967 Unclaimed Freight Store built a store on SW Adams Street. My grandfather, Mitchell Serafin, was hired as general manager and the business thrived on what was then the south part of downtown Peoria. My grandfather bought a share of the business from one of two brothers, and then in 1985 he bought the remaining interest from the other brother. Today my uncle, Pierre, and my father, Tom Wiegand, are in charge!

In 2003 we invested over $2,000,000.00 to develop the area across the street from our main store. The new store was opened as an Ashley Furniture Home Store. In 2007 we decided to part ways with the Ashley Company and that building is now the UFS Furniture and Mattress Outlet managed by my mother, Claire Wiegand.
